NAVOI REGION

Navoi region is a major industrial and cultural center of the country. This is the largest region in terms of area, which is second only to Karakalpakstan. The administrative center is the city of Navoi, named after the great Uzbek poet and thinker, scientist and statesman Alisher Navoi.

Traveling through Navoi region, you can find yourself in one of the most famous places in Central Asia with rock paintings – in The sarmyshsay gorge, located on the southern slope of Karatau. Karatau is one of the spurs of the Nurata mountains.

The nature of Sarmyshsay is diverse – different types of trees grow here, and the slopes are covered with dense thickets of bushes. In spring, the gorge is a striking sight: everywhere there are tulips, poppies, and endless expanses of greenery.

After a short walk of 1.5-2 km, you will find yourself in the picturesque tract of the Sarmysh river, where one of the most famous places in Central Asia with rock paintings is located on the southern slope of Karatau, 45 km North-East of Navoi. Karatau is one of the spurs of the Nurata mountains. To the South of the ridge is the Zerafshan valley. The nature of Sarmyshsay is diverse – different types of trees grow here, and the slopes are covered with dense thickets of bushes. In spring, the gorge is a striking sight: everywhere there are tulips, poppies, and endless expanses of greenery.

The nearest way to the sarmyshsay petroglyphs is through the territory of the children’s health camp “Sarmysh”. Therefore, if the tour is organized in the summer, when children are resting in the camp, the territory of the camp, which is about 1.5 km, is crossed on foot. At any other time of the year, this part of the way can be done by car. After the camp begins off road which you need to go about 2 km After overcoming all the way, you will find yourself in the picturesque tract of the Sarmysh river, where there are unique archaeological monuments of the stone age, bronze age, early iron age and the middle ages.

The size of the territory of the sarmyshsay “gallery” is truly huge – 20 sq.km. where the cultural and historical complex of monuments of the ancient world and the middle ages has been preserved.

To date, more than 10 thousand petroglyphs have been found in Sarmyshsay. This is a very large and diverse collection of rock carvings. Most of the petroglyphs are located in the middle reaches of the saya (river). Burial mounds and sacred sites are located near the petroglyphs.
